Everything You Wanted to Know About Oil Drilling Bit Types

What is a drill bit?

A drill bit is basically what cuts into the rock while drilling an oil or gas well. The drill bit is a rotating apparatus, which comprises of two or three cones which are made up of the hardest materials and consist of sharp teeth that help to cut the rock and the hard sediments below.

The drill bit is placed at the tip of the drill string which is below the drill collar and the drill pipe and is continuously rotating whenever in use.

Uses of drill bit:

1: They are robust cutting tools useful for creating holes in hard material.

2: Used for extracting core

3: Helps for cutting irregular holes in metal or wood.

The invention of the Oil drill bit:

Initially curated by Howard Hughes, the wastebasket-size piece of equipment cost $3,500 and weighed 78 pounds. This oil drilling bit can turn up to a hundred times per minute. It is also known as a tricone rotary rock drill bit and is used to drill oil wells. As they faced trouble in getting holes through tough underground rock formations because the drill-bit used earlier was a plain flat edged piece of metal called a fishtail. He then began experimenting with creating a new drill bit consisting of rotating steel cones that could pulverize the rock and not wear off quickly.

Types of oil drilling bits:

All the manufacturers and workers realize that different oil drilling bit types are required to assist in a specific kind of rotary application. It is quite apparent to them that a one-size-fits-all drill bit does not work and that all the drill bits serve their unique purpose.

Manufacturers of these industries have consciously created such drill bits to cater to these specific needs. May it be an oil drilling bit types, water mining, completion of good construction or drilling related to oil and water, the manufacturers have successfully risen to the challenges that prevail in the drilling industry.

A few oil drilling bit types available are:

1: Dirt Digger PDC bits by Atlas Copco: The dirt digger is made up of a 3,5 and six blade steel body. It is made from 4140 high heat treated steel and is designed in such a way that I can drill up to depths of 3000-4000 feet in certain homogeneous and consolidated formations. It is a versatile tool for oil drilling and has an oil-drill bit attached.

2: Tricones: The tri-cone oil bits feature tungsten carbide and specific rock-engaging cones. They have replaceable carbide fluid ports and strategically placed carbide buttons to extend the tools service life. The tricone drill-bit, the collar, and the pipe are systematically placed inside the hole. Once the tricone reaches a precise depth, the process has to be repeated over and over again. The workers can now be able to test for oil in the well. The tricone drill bits work at extraordinary speed and are useful especially in the oil-drilling bits and for the drilling of wells.

3: Drag bits: The drag bit is a tough and durable oil drilling bit. Its unique design makes it suitable for oil-field use and the construction of deep wells underground the earth’s surface.

4: Mega force fixed cutter oil drilling bits: The enhanced hydraulics and premium tungsten carbide matrix material drills through the hardest and challenging architectural structures. The select cutter function of the PDC technology helps make the cuts stay sharper longer making it suitable to work as an oil drilling bits.

The oil drilling bit manufacturers are adding supplementary multidimensional cutter technologies and small parts to fixed drill bits to create a smarter, stronger bit that recognizes different rock layers and serves a vital role in oil drilling and well construction in the oil and gas industry.
